A Measure of Disorder

Well, that was a crappy week. The basics are as they were in my last post, but I thought they’d have resolved themselves by now. They have not, although they have eased. On Thursday, I thought I’d recovered enough to walk along to our local supermarket and back – about two miles and one of my frequent walks. I got along there easily enough, but part way back I had to phone Kirstin and get her to come and pick me up as I ran out of energy.

I was watching the news coverage coming out of British Columbia, thinking about how quickly things have broken down, and it occurred to me that there was a parallel with my current state. Last week I felt fine, working out on the cycle and power-walking up our hill, and then I was unable to do any of that thanks to a random microbe. The thing that annoys me most about it, is that it is a reminder of age and vulnerability that I generally push well to the back of my mind.

Despite all that, I have been jotting away at notes for writing things, even though I haven’t had the energy actually to write anything.

I spent yesterday, for the most part, watching TV, albeit online.

Foundation concluded its first season impressively. It remains well removed from the original book(s). If you can get past that, it is a decent piece of SF TV.

Invasion continues to impress. There’s a lot of online abuse directed its way, but I look forward to each episode.

The Wheel of Time kicked off yesterday and I watched the first three episodes. It features stock fantasy characters scuttling through the Celtic twilight, deep in the shadow of Tolkein. The music was frequently modal, ‘sung’ by voices drenched heavy reverb/delay, with an excursion into a bad Tom Waits impersonation. There were echoes of LoTR, The Hunger Games and Britannia, and one of the lead actors gave out strong Haydn Christensen vibes. There’s enough there to keep me interested, though it absolutely is not Game of Thrones to which, inevitably it is being compared. Not for the first time, I wished Sarah Hughes was still around to write about it.
