Well I would like this, wouldn’t I? Brilliant from start to finish. Power, melody, dynamism, musicianship and intelligent lyrics delivered with passion. And that’s it. That’s the post, really.
This is Van der Graaf Generator’s third album, and I said most of what I want to say in my comments on the second, The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other in February. They’ve grown in confidence for this one and recruited Robert Fripp to add guitar to The Emperor in His War Room. I’m happy to attest that the album opener, Killer, remains as powerful as ever live.
The astonishing thing is they managed to top this with 1971’s Pawn Hearts and then later with Godbluff (1975) and Still Life (1976).

Long experience has taught me that VdGG are not for everyone; putting on one of their albums is often a simple way to clear a room.
That remains the case, but that won’t stop me singing their praises.
