I first heard this album in its entirety earlier this year when I was looking for the first recording of Lover of The Bayou. I bought it straight away.
It was originally released as a double album on 14 September 1970. The first album was live, the second studio. The CD release has all of the original material on one cd and a second cd of previously unreleased material from the same era.
The Byrds in 1970 were Roger McGuin, Clarence White (guitar), Gene Parsons (drums) and Skip Battin (bass). The album is mostly material by the band, with a couple of Dylan songs, a Leadbelly song, and a Lowell George song. There’s only one track on it I think is weak, but this is more than made up for with the excellence of everything else, notably a sixteen-minute jammin’ Eight Miles High that rocks your socks off. This is most definitely not the electric folk of the jingle-jangle morning of their career.
I listened on cd, and so should you, unless you have the original vinyl. Otherwise, the usual online sources have it.
