Writer
Writer was Carole King’s debut album, the one before Tapestry hit the big time. I like King as a songwriter–who doesn’t? but I hadn’t heard this one before.
I have mixed thoughts about it. It’s solid, well-produced and soulful. Even though the focus is on King as writer rather than performer, she does a good job in presenting the songs. There’s some good playing on it, especially on Raspberry Jam, and King gives committed vocal performances throughout.
On the other hand I find the songs safe, repetitive and corporate in structure and content and, ultimately, disposable. I know the album has its devotees, and that’s fair enough, but I’m not one of them, and, frankly, I’m struggling to find much to say about it. If you are a big fan of Carole King you’ll probably like this, but not as much as you like Tapestry.
