So far, aside from the wonderful Melanie, April 1970 has been a disappointment, and casting my eyes down Wikipedia’s list of albums released in that month hasn’t inspired much enthusiasm. However Wiki doesn’t mention the debut album of the Amazing Blondel, released only in the UK. Although I’ve long known their name, and heard reasonable things about their later albums on Island Records, I’d never really listened to them before, so I was looking forward to this.
This was their debut album, and it isn’t very good. Their playing of assorted wind and string instruments is good and they clearly had talent in that respect. The problem is that the material is weak and the vocals are terrible.
I don’t really propose to spend any more words on it. It’s on Spotify, but for the masochistically inclined I’ve linked below to the full album on YouTube.
