I’m happy to be ending the year with another album I have never heard previously–Scott Walker’s ‘Til The Band Comes In, a loose concept album with some songs based on the lives of people in an apartment building, as well as some covers of standards. I first listened to it a couple of days ago and looked forward to my second listen to write this.
This was Walker’s sixth solo album, and it’s a classy affair. I have no idea who the musicans are–strings and bass for the most part, but everything fits together nicely. Walker sings every track except Long About Now sung by Esther Ofarim. The record reminds me in some ways of Frank Sinatra’s Watertown from March, not least because it, too, sank without trace on release.
Because here’s the thing: after that first listening the other day I did some research on the record and discovered that the tenor of opinion is that the album isn’t very good, not up to his usual standard, and I shouldn’t be enjoying it at all. Well bollocks to that: this is a fine album, and one I’m happy to end the year’s project on.
I listened on Spotify and it’s also available as a YouTube playlist.
