Moondance
For Abbey Road and Bridge Over Troubed Water I had to revisit two old favourites and test them against my memory. Moondance, released 27 January 1970, is different: I have never stopped playing it, and it feels new every single time.
Unlike Abbey Road and Bridge Over Troubled Water, which attracted critical commentary on release, Moondance was immediately recognised as something special.
‘All the tracks are superb and some are considerably more than that,’ wrote Richard Williams in Melody Maker (28 March 1970).
He really has found some beautiful, haunting songs too, all of them self-penned. They’re that good that as I worked through the album I was thinking he can’t possibly keep up this standard. He does.

Not a note is out of place; not a bar sounds dated. In a year of good music, very few releases reached the standard of Moondance; none bettered it. And that’s it, there’s nothing more to say.
