Right On
Playing catch-up with these posts, I’m fortunate to encounter some albums that can be dealt with quickly.
Oh Happy Day was Glen Campbell’s 17th solo album. Now, I think Campbell was a fine singer and an outstanding guitar player, but like all artists he depends on the quality of the material he or his producers select and commercial pressures on him from his record company to get some product out. Oh Happy Day is schlock with a gospel bent, and instantly disposable.
Right On was The Supreme’s 19th album and the first to feature Jean Terrell after the departure of Diana Ross. I dismissed the Farewell recordings with Ross earlier this month; Right On is a very different record. It’s a classy Motown production, well performed and sung. It doesn’t break any new ground, but it was never designed to. Terrell does a great job and Ross isn’t missed at all. Slick Motown pop and listenable in a background music sort of way.
