What Love Has..
I considered giving Cucumber Castle by the Bee Gees an entry of it’s own, but in the end decided not. Cucumber Castle is classic early Bee Gees–strong songwriting, clean, professional production, but not the kind of thing that grabs me personally. On the other hand, if you like the early Bee Gees sound (ie before Saturday Night Fever, you’ll probably like the album. Your call.
What Love Has Joined Together is a classy Tamla set. Each side has extended versions of love songs by noted writers, including Stevie Wonder and Lennon/McCartney. I find it impossible to say anything bad about this record while remaining unexcited by it. Rather like Right On by the Supremes, the album is beautifully performed, well arranged for the most part, cleanly produced. This music is designed for the commercial market, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it does mean it works best for me as background music, maybe on a portable transistor radio on a sunny beach somewhere. I know that sounds harsh but hey, it’s my blog.
