Riding the Waves to Eternity: Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

17. August 2022 Update

July was a frustrating month. I wrote last month about my progress resuming running after over a decade and what I was looking forward to achieving during July. Unfortunately, I tweaked a calf muscle on 3 July and that put an end to any running for two weeks (and I didn’t do much walking for a couple of days either.) These things take much longer to heal in my 60s than they did in my 40s. When I felt sure about running again, I built up slowly and tentatively with some short runs around our local streets. That was going well until my knee decided to act up as well.

Perhaps it isn’t a surprise that my median weight only dropped by just over half a kilo over the month – normally I’ve been losing a kilo and a half a month. In the circumstances, I’m happy with the direction of travel but, as I said at the top, frustrated.

On the plus side, I went to our local swimming pool this morning for my first swim in a long time – certainly pre-Covid. I swam more or less continuously for around 35 minutes. It felt good, but I was knackered at the end. Swimming uses the upper body in ways that running doesn’t, so it was the opening of another front in the campaign for overall fitness. Also, and not to be too gross about it, losing weight around the middle leaves flab to be reduced, and swimming helps with that: it’s good for the tummy and tits.

We’ll be on holiday later this month for the first time since 2019. It remains to be seen what that does for my diet and fitness approach 🙂
