Riding the Waves to Eternity: Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

T Rex

I’ve written before that I wasn’t a great fan of Tyrannosaurus Rex in it’s earlier incarnations. There were signs of change on their previous album and they become more obvious here. The fey whimsy is going, if not gone, and this is a more direct and more mature sound.

This album brings a change of name and a change of mood. When this came out they had scored big in the charts with Ride A White Swan (not included here, though recorded in the same sessions). Here, on the cusp of their transformation from hippie wannabees to glam idols on the posters on a generation of girl’s walls, there’s a real musical intelligence and instrumental ability on display, expertly marshalled by Tony Visconti as producer (and Roy Thomas Baker as engineer).

I really like this album; it’s the culmination of what Tyrannosaurus were striving for all those years and, much as I like their poptastic career, I kind of wish there’d been more of this. A good album (though The Wizard goes on a bit).

I listened on Spotify. There’s also a YouTube playlist that you’ll find here (for some reason it has no embed code)

Oh, and a Very Happy Christmas! With a guid and mightily improved New Year to follow, as Oor Wullie would say. No virus would get Wullie – he would probably take it home and get his Maw to feed it.

Your 1970’s music posts have been a fine effort. Ian. They are so detailed and concise, knowledgeable without being smart-arsed, and beautifully written. I can’t say I remember many of the acts, but that’s what makes it interesting. Thank you for all your efforts. Ian. More cowbells!

Thank you. More cowbell is always a good thing, perhaps there’s some wrapped up under the tree. Merry Christmas!
