Riding the Waves to Eternity: Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

9 March : Spanish Castle Magic

LP Sleeve

Castles of Spain

I wrote at the start of the month that I had for the most part avoided guitar heroes. Today we have a fifty-year-old album from March 1970 by one of the guitar greats; a man whose precision, tone, technique and musicality have no equal: Andrés Segovia.

As far as I can tell, this LP has never been released in the UK and hasn’t made it to cd remaster. I have no idea why.

The album consists of the titular suite of guitar sketches, plus several shorter works, mostly 16/17th century including 3 dances by Dowland and two 19th century piano pieces by Grieg transcribed for guitar by Segovia.

It’s a wonderful record, adorned with simple skill and artistry throughout. Even when the pieces aren’t Spanish you can still close your eyes and imagine yourself under hot blue skies in an arid landscape dominated by olive trees and the glimmer of a distant sea.

I can’t see it on Spotify, presumably because there has never been a digital remaster, but you can find it all on YouTube. And you should.
