Riding the Waves to Eternity: Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

I had a decent walk earlier then spent most of this afternoon cleaning typewriters, ready to put them to use. One is going to have to go to someone who knows what they’re doing in February for an opinion on sorting a mechanical issue (that I suspect is probably something minor.) But fresh ribbons arrived today so, as soon as the cleaning is finished, I can get cracking with writing on another machine.

When not cleaning typewriters or writing/revising, I’ve been distracting myself with TV. Particularly, catching up with seasons 5 and 6 of The Expanse and binging the third and final season of A Discovery of Witches. I’m not going to say anything about the latter because last time I did that I inadvertently spoiled season 2 for a friend. I do, however, have views.

The Expanse continues to be quality SF, with good production values, good writing and a good cast. There is only one episode left of season 6 which wraps the show up. The books, which I haven’t read, keep going where no man has gone before, and, if I have one regret about the programme, it is that it is stopping short of telling the continuing story. On the other hand, they may as well wrap it up on their own terms rather than shudder to the abrupt halt of a cancellation.

I’ve tried several times in the past to read Jack Kerouac’s On The Road, never with any success. I think I gave my copy away to a charity shop some years ago. I also tried, and gave up on, his Wake Up: A Life of the Buddha. To my surprise, I found myself reading On The Road in a charity shop and bought it again. So far so good. I’ve never really got on with the Beat writers: maybe that could change in my dotage.
