Midnight Train To Georgia
Like a lot of people, apparently, I was up after midnight last night watching the CNN live US election coverage. I was hoping for a Portillo moment, which didn’t come, but it was worth it for the evisceration of 45’s press conference. Anderson Cooper said ‘We see him like an obese turtle on his back, flailing in the sun.’ All the rest was in the vein of lying liar lies some more. By this afternoon, Jake Tapper was talking about ‘the President’s spawn.’
It was this morning after breakfast that the Georgia count flipped for Biden; later that Biden took a lead in Pennsylvania. As Arizona tightens, Biden continues to stretch a lead in Nevada, where a Democrat has taken John McCain’s old Senate seat. There were some things I wanted to do today about plotting out some writing, but there came a point where I stopped pretending and accepted I was hooked to people talking authoritatively about nothing happening; the political equivalent of the Dan Maskell rain commentary at Wimbledon (the man who taught millions of Brits to mispronounce Navratilova and Mandlikova).
At the time of writing this (around 20.00 UK) there is still nothing happening despite things being ‘just about to’ happen for several hours. Having said that, I think it’s clear now that Biden is President-Elect and it’s just a matter of completing the process.
In the meantime, it’s entertaining watching the agonies of the Brexiteers, who put their faith in 45 to help them out with a trade deal, and the middle-class lefties, still smarting from the defenestration of Jeremy Corbin, who reckoned Biden would be taken apart by 45 in a way their their hero Sanders wouldn’t have been.
After posting this, I may retire to the office for some music and, I think, an early night after that.

Music: my daughter made this suggestion immediately after 45’s press conference, and it’s spot-on. Skeeter Davis: The End of the World. I’ve added some mood music from Glenn Miller to follow.
