The least said about today, weather-wise, the better. It was grey and wet when I woke up, grey and wet when I took a walk to the shops and it’s still grey and wet now. Unusually for mid June, I made a winter casserole for supper, complete with dumplings, to warm us up. I’ve also been dopey all day. After breakfast my plan was to read for a while, but I fell asleep again instead.
I really didn’t enjoy the walk to the shops. The traffic was noticeably heavier on our hill and at the Drumbrae Roundabout. In the supermarket there were maybe 25% of us, at a maximum, wearing masks or other face coverings. I’ve mused here before about how things might look as some degree of normality returns, about how much I’ve enjoyed the general silence and lack of pollution. Watching the cars this afternoon, most of them absurdly overpowered for city use, I realised that my earlier hopes were a pipe dream. There will be no green dividend from this.
Yesterday, the unutterably vile Mr Michael Gove, a man lodged in the u-bend of power like a turd that won’t flush, told the EU that, global pandemic and crashed economy notwithstanding, the UK government wouldn’t seek an extension on the current discussions. It is reported that they’ve caved in on chlorinated chicken and hormone infused beef in the talks with the USA. I realised then, too, that once the current shitstorm is over, they will show no mercy on the NHS and the BBC. They are incapable of learning. And they have an eighty-seat majority with four years to go.
Oh, and we’ve got fat gammon on the streets of London giving Nazi salutes and fighting with the police. We’ve been here before.

Music: I love this song, and have done for the 42 years since its release, but I wish it wasn’t still so damned relevant.

It’s nice to be reminded of a group or a song that has slipped from your memory over time. Listening to Steel Pulse also helped to purge the thought of Michael Gove for a few minutes so thanks for that.
