Riding the Waves to Eternity: Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

Neighbours, Everybody Needs Good Neighbours

invitation

Street Party!

The invitation dropped through our letterbox a couple of days ago. It caught me by surprise in many ways because our neighbours, although a good bunch, tend to keep to themselves. It’s always been that way in the 24 years we’ve been here.

We were a little sceptical that anything would happen because the weather hasn’t been great. In fact there was a good turn out and everyone was in good spirits under our umbrellas. I think I spoke to more neighbours over the course of a couple of hours than I have in the past few years. The conversation was mostly small talk, but it was good, not least because of its novelty value after 3 months. One of the more interesting actual conversations was with one of the two GPs on our street, who said she thought the actual incidence of the virus amongst the general population in their care was very low.

Although the original idea was to do things at the end of our driveways, in fact we clustered around a couple of places, and we were outside, maintaining a sensible distance, well wrapped up against the rain and the chilly wind. Anyway, it was such good fun that we’ll probably do it again, possibly next Friday.

Music: I played this album this afternoon in the shed while I was editing. Every so often I had to stop and listen to what was happening. The core soloists here are Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt (alto) and Stan Getz (tenor). This was recorded in one take, with no rehearsal, as far as I know.
