Riding the Waves to Eternity: Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

la reine est morte.

I had meant to write some thoughts about the visit Amy and I paid today (in the USA, yesterday in the UK) to the Detroit Institute of Art, but instead will simply note the death of the Queen.

It is odd watching reaction from here – principally that has been on social media where I have seen hot takes, cold takes, good takes, bad takes, self-aggrandising takes, performative takes and fawning takes. I suppose that’s inevitable. It was on the news on the radio as Amy and I drove home, but so was climate change and the unfolding problems in California. There is more rolling coverage on TV I believe, but I haven’t had it turned on. BBC News via iPlayer is geoblocked here so I couldn’t watch that even if I wanted to.

There’s a lot to be said about this moment, but now is not the time to say it. It is, though, without a question a turning point. My only comment now is the one that I’ve made already on social media – how ironic that the last act of a queen who had remained a symbol of national unity was to anoint the new leader of the party that has done most to rip the country apart.
