Riding the Waves to Eternity:Ā Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

Like That Swallow High

A reminder for regular readers that I plan to stop writing daily posts next week. The blog will continue, of course, but at a more stately pace.

It’s been a quiet day today. No rain, thankfully, but not much else either, at least on the surface. Behind the scenes, I’m pleased to say that in the next couple of weeks I’ll have funding in place for my foray into self-publishing. I think I’ve put enough aside to cover three books, plus some other odds and ends, and a chunk for contingency.

I’m also more knowledgeable at the end of the day than I was at the start regarding tax and the self-employed/sole traders in the UK, and about tax treaties between the UK and US.

I reverted to my habit of avoiding the news today. I did have a quick scan before writing this post to see if anything happened that caught my attention, but I’m afraid it didn’t. Maybe that just says something about me.

Music. Anyway, as I don’t have much to say tonight, it’s time to dig deep for the music. This is the great Lizzie Higgins. I have a cd of her singing that is so good I get vertigo listening to it. I like all sorts of music, but stuff like this is the ur-source; unaccompanied, perfectly paced, uncompromising. The song is English, but its stanzas are found in Scotland and America. Talking of vertigo, the late Martyn Bennett’s adaptation of it was used as the soundtrack for Danny Macaskill’s The Ridge, which is the second video below.

Oh I wish, I wish, oh I wish in vain,
I wish I was a maid again.
But a maid again I will never be
‘Til apple it grows on orange tree.
