A Trip to The Garden Centre
Excitement! A visit across town to a garden centre. I only went because I needed some canes for my tomato plants and they seem to be sold out everywhere nearer to us. The trip was fraught: somehow, during their long lockdown layover, the indicators had stopped functioning on every car and van in Edinburgh.
The garden centre, pleasingly, was restricting the numbers on the premises and reminding everyone to wear a face covering of some sort. Pretty much everyone did.
Naturally, I spent more money than I’d planned, but had an enjoyable time pottering around in the garden when we got back. We had thought we might buy some garden furniture, but the prices dissuaded us from that notion very thoroughly.
I stopped pottering when rain threatened, and retreated to my desk. Eventually, the rain did more than threaten. The app on my phone said we were experiencing ‘showers’, which was true if you count a torrential downpour as a shower.
For whatever combination of reasons, it turned out for the best. I took the thoughts I had yesterday, sat down, and wrote 2100 words, which moves the story along nicely. I still have to finish the chapter, but I know where it’s going now.

Barbers are open next week. My hair was already shoulder length going into lockdown and it’s four month since it was last done. I daresay there will be an initial rush, but, assuming my regular barber is open again and Sandra is still there, a thin and trim is on the horizon. I also got a call from the dentist wondering if I could make it in for a rearranged check-up. In November.
