I realised earlier that I’ve settled into an comfortable routine: get up, have an easy breakfast, spend time on an exercise bike, revise some fragments of fiction, write up a 1970s music post, and find time to make supper some days, before going for my walk. For all that sounds light, in fact I often find myself wondering when I’m going to find time to do something, notably write something new that isn’t a blog post.
And I keep meaning to get my guitar fingers back into action, but really I just play the same two or three tunes all the time to keep them ticking over (Merrily Kiss the Quaker, Charlie Hunter’s Jig and Sir Sydney Smith’s March, since you ask).
It was a good bike ride earlier, only 15 minutes but I upped the resistance so it was harder work. I also finished the ride with two minutes at double or triple speed with the Ramones on my headphones. It was a good walk too. I went out a bit earlier when it was still light and that made the empty roads even spookier somehow.
My choice of music last night stirred some controversy on a WhatsApp group I participate in (which used to be a listserver email group and has continued in one form or another since 2004-ish, maybe earlier). Various views were expressed on both the song and Bruce generally. Tonight I’ve picked a song by Nick Drake’s Mum, Molly, but I’ve chosen the rendition by Tyneside’s finest The Unthanks, followed by Gabrielle Drake reading one of her mother’s poems: Road to the Stars and Warning to Heroes.
