Riding the Waves to Eternity: Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

Lap of the Gods

After multiple revisions, rewrites, responses from first readers and notes from my editor friends, I have submitted my first novel to several literary agents for consideration. Despite the assurances of the said editors, there is a distinct whiff of vulnerability about doing this, essentially reducible to OMG what if they hate it?

What’s the novel about? It’s the story of a cynical, burnt-out priest, approaching the end of their career, doubting their faith and fearing their life has been a waste. An encounter with a woman from Celtic legend in a remote part of Scotland triggers a reassessment of their life and choices. The protagonist’s journey is one of self-discovery and renewal set against mystery and conspiracy. The novel uses fantasy elements, playing on elements of fairie lore, and the action arising from the encounter, to reflect on questions of fantasy and reality, faith and belief, ritual and magic, and the unexpected rediscovery of love.

Identifying agents to send it to was an exercise in itself, but not a story for today.

At some point in the revision process of the novel, I realised I had the makings of at least another couple of novels in the same universe with the same characters, and some new ones, and the first of those is what I’m writing now (about 1/3 of the way through the first draft).
