New old toy
I have a couple of laptops in regular use. One is a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 that is my main machine. I also have its predecessor, also a Dell Inspiron, which now runs Ubuntu Linux and which is mainly a general purpose machine in the office – surfing,writing and stuff – while the new machine stays in the house.
The problem with both is that they are too heavy to be comfortable travel companions and so I decided that I needed a smaller device that could slip easily into a bag for use on the road, or, more likely, on the train. I looked around and decided that new machines were too expensive to justify – so expensive that they make a Macbook Air seem like a bargain. I may end up with an Air in a few months, but not yet.
I went to see what I could find ‘used’ in Edinburgh and dropped into a shop where they were literally just refurbishing a machine on a workbench. The price was right and I’m typing on it now – a Lenovo ideapad s10-2.
For present purposes it suits me just fine. It also runs Windows 7, which I’m comfortable with, but I’m also comforted that if it can run Win. 7 it can run Ubuntu should I feel like it later. It is not the fanciest machine but it does the job.
Also, there is part of the house where the wifi doesn’t stretch because of the walls in this 1930s house. For those places, and also for travel in the UK, I bought a mifi unit giving me portable internet pretty much everywhere. I reckon the two devices will keep my going for a while.
