It has been a busy month, notably the joy of celebrating Amy and Jared’s wedding on 20th June. Unfortunately, the first thing that happened once the adrenaline wore off was that I came down with a nasty summer cold that still hasn’t entirely dissipated. That’s why I haven’t written about the wedding properly – yet.

You might also expect that I would be writing about the UK General Election next week. Of course I have my views, but I will be working at a polling station all day next Thursday and part of the deal is that I maintain a neutral stance or, at least, don’t give the impression that I favour any particular party, which is fair enough. My personal views are, I’d like to think, a bit more nuanced than that, but they can wait.
You can expect my thoughts to flow afterwards, though.

I wrote here twenty years ago that
the history of the twentieth century was the history of the rise of America: the history of the twenty-first century will be that of its decline and fall. The hope has to be that it doesn’t drag the rest of us down with it.
I have never resiled from that view – if anything the current direction of the US reinforces and amplifies my fears. There is a lot wrong in the world, including here in the UK and in Europe, but the US is in far and away the most dangerous position, I think.
It is small comfort that the climate crisis continues to dwarf even that.
