Riding the Waves to Eternity: Hangin’ with the Cosmic Surfer

À la recherche du posts perdu

“You don’t blog much any more” is something one or two people have said recently. They’re right, of course, and I feel a vague sense of loss about it. I’d like to say I’ll remedy the lack in 2016, but I probably won’t, if I know me.

2015 has been an odd year all round, dominated by the long illness and death of my mother-in-law, Anne. She had a stroke on the day we flew back from Hong Kong in January, and her almost complete incapacity and all that went with it cast the year into a limbo from which it never recovered. I didn’t feel any inclination to write about it for public consumption, nor about much else. That’s also why I haven’t written anything about our trip to Hong Kong, although I really liked it, or about a week in Dubrovnik, which was also fab.

Which doesn’t mean I haven’t been writing. Quite apart from stuff for work, I have also been writing stories. These have been for my own amusement, but a few people have seen them and liked them. For the most part they are, I think, quite good as first drafts, but they need work to get them up to the standard I’d like them to be at. They are linked in various ways, and, in first draft, come in at a total of 92,000 words. At some time in early 2016 I’ll start the work of revising them in earnest now that the last one in the sequence is written. After that, who knows?

One story, which isn’t part of that sequence has been submitted, for consideration to this call for “respectable horror“. I won’t know much about that for a few more weeks I think. I have no great publishing ambitions, but it’s interesting to test the water.

Despite the “respectable horror” thing, I hadn’t planned to write genre, or at least not exclusively genre. I’m currently trying to plot something that will be mainstream–defiantly non-commercial, but interesting to me at least.

Changing the subject, I was delighted when the consultant at the Western General Hospital, whom I’ve been seeing for two or three years, told me, in the nicest possible way, that he didn’t want to see me again. I’d be even happier were I not four stones heavier than when this blood pressure thing started, and need to do something about that, but that’s for when the left over Christmas cake and trifle are finished. I’d like to run again, but every time I get up to being able to manage a comfortable mile or so, my knees protest too much.

So it goes.

Despite what I said up top ^^^ I would like to blog more if I can. Of course that depends on having something to say, which is always a doubtful proposition.

See you in 2016: hope it’s a great one for you.
