Brightly shone the moon - not
We had our first snow of the year last night and it was still there this morning. It wasn’t much and I believe the west of Scotland had more but it is worth noting.
What is in the back of my mind is the worry that this might be a harbinger of something else. There can be no surprise whatsover that there is a flurry of snow in December, although as a rule Edinburgh has its own micro-climate and doesn’t get much. However this has been a wet year in the UK and Edinburgh certainly hasn’t missed out on that.
Part of the reason for the wetness has been that the gulf and jetstreams have been further south than usual this year – the same circumstances that led to the winters of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 which were notable for heavy snowfalls follewed by sustained cold.
As Edinburgh is on the same latitude as Labrador to the west and Moscow to the east, it matters to us whether a pattern is settling in.
Who knows? In meteorological time measurements over three or four years show volatility not trend. I would still rather not have to deal with another hard winter though.
