…celebrates a birthday today I think. Happy birthday to him, and many more of them
This was the first day of my summer holidays and it was great. I slept in for a while, wandered around in old clothes and went into town where I also wandered around. I was actually shopping for a couple of things but couldn’t find what I was after – and didn’t mind too much because I was happy to wander about. It can’t last, there are things to do and we are away for a break for a few days as well next week, but today I revelled in slobbing about.
Just a quicky tonight. Skeeter Davis found fame as a country singer but then she did some crossover “pop” work in the early sixties and came up with this which I have been listening to a lot tonight because it is wonderful. Pre-feminist sentiments I’m afraid …
After my last post I got thinking about great “rain” songs either metaphorical or literal. On the literal side there are gems such as Willie Brown’s “Mississippi Blues” and Doc Watson’s “Deep River Blues”. The great metaphorical songs are fixed in my mind as Jackson Browne’s “Before the Deluge” – especially as it was interpreted by Moving Hearts – and then there is this one: Peter Gabriel’s “Here Comes the Flood”

It's raining again
I know that I shall attract complaints from Canada that, in mentioning the weather, I am usurping a traditional Canuck rite (and, indeed, right), and yet I must comment on the incessant, persistent rain which seems to have been falling from the skies forever.
Even in Scotland, renowned as a land of mist and mountains with occasional sharp showers, one shouldn’t have to put up with this drenching which benefits no-one except the weeds in my front garden.
I do not know what the causes of this duff July are – it was the same last year in August as I recall – and I am not going to get dragged into speculating on global warming, climate change, movements in the Gulfstream/Jetstream or any of that stuff. All I know is that substantial quantities of H2O are being sucked out of the Atlantic and dropped onto my head and I’m getting fed up with it.
I did have the sense to read a weather forecast, though, and went out for a long run yesterday evening rather than today. I have not got back onto the training schedule I was on before the injury and was worried earlier in the week that I had overtrained to compensate and had hurt my foot again. Luckily I haven’t and, at age 49 1/2 I ran for an hour and a half last night for the first time in my life. Although I have not yet got back onto my original schedule, I have been measuring myself against another which is designed simply to get one round a marathon course without being too interested in doing so at any particular speed. On this new schedule I’m doing fine and am ahead of the game thanks to the work I put in before the injury.
Anyway, only three more days at work and then I’m on holiday. Hoorah!
